Based on the historic role of margarine as an alternative to butter, margarine is fortified with vitamin A to the same level as in butter, which is important for the funcitoning of the immune system and for good eyesight. Compared to butter, margarine contains much higher levels of vitamin D. Vitamin D is essential for strong bones and teeth.

Our margarine business formed the start of Unilever Sri Lanka 75 years ago. Since then, margarine, made of good vegetable oils, played an important dietary role for growth and development by contributing essential fatty acids and vitamins A & D. The essential fats and vitamins A & D all need to be taken up from the diet because the body cannot produce them by itself (the essential fats and vitamins A) or is not available in sufficient amounts. All of these nutrients are important building blocks for a healthy body. Children as well as adults need them to grow a healthy and strong body.

Building blocks for your family

The fat in spreads can be used either as building blocks, together with the vitamins, or it can be used as fuel to give energy. One gram of fat provides 9 k/cal. As proteins, carbohydrates and alcohol all provide less calories per gram. Fat is the most energy dense nutrient in the diet. For instance 20g per day of a 60% fat spread provides ca. 4.5% of the recommended daily energy intake of an average adult. In addition, it provides >15% of the recommended intake of the essential fats and vitamins A & D.
