France: Environmental training at Amora Maille
Amora Maille, a Unilever culinary foods business based in France, has invested in staff training and new equipment to protect the environment and save money.
Employee training
Since 1997 the company has reduced energy use at its factories by 20% and water consumption by 40% for each tonne of product made.
Staff are taught how to reduce water and energy use, minimise waste, protect water quality and limit noise and other disturbances. All employees take part. Posters and leaflets with environmental tips are displayed around the site to reinforce what they have learnt.
Improved process
The company's factory at Chevigny has improved its mustard making process. It now uses a solid bung, rather than water, to push mustard out of the pipes which connect the storage tanks and packaging machines. This has significantly reduced water consumption and the amount of mustard in waste water.
